The aim of this research was to discriminate groups of students who had the same knowledge of English by using the Pathfinder procedure (Schvaneveldt 1990; Schvaneveldt, Durso, Goldsmith, Breen, Cooke, Tucker and De Maio 1985). To get this purpose four different measures were obtained: proximity, similarity, distance and also a lexical test. This test was exhaustively assessed to shed light on the quality of tests and quizzes that students were asked to fill in. The results indicate that the Pathfinder procedure, together with the lexical test, is a good tool to distinguish groups of students with a similar knowledge of the English language. 1. INTRODUCCION
